Adaptive Structuration Theory and Self-Organizing Systems Theory
نویسنده
چکیده
Most theoretical perspectives used to explain the use and effects of communication and decision support technologies assume someform of technological a&rminism. lnwnsisten&s in the research jindings have prompted theorists to reject the assumptions of technological determinism in favor of an emergent perspective. To date, only adaptive structuration theo y CAST) offers the promise of satisfying two requirements for exphnation based on an emergent perspective: recursivify and unique effects. The current article reviews the application of AST to the study of a relatively recent technology in the workplace--group decision support systems (GDSS). Next it discusses AST’s challenge to capture, dynamically and precisely, GDSS processes and outcomes. In response to these concerns, self-organizing systems theory (SOST) is reviewed and applied to problematic areas in GDSS research with the aim of advancing AST.

The communication of meaning and the structuration of expectations: Giddens' "structuration theory" and Luhmann's "self-organization"
The communication of meaning as different from (Shannon-type) information is central to Luhmann’s social systems theory and Giddens’ structuration theory of action. These theories share an emphasis on reflexivity, but focus on meaning along a divide between inter-human communication and intentful action as two different systems of reference. Recombining these two theories into a theory about th...

Luhmann’s social systems theory and Giddens’ structuration theory of action share an emphasis on reflexivity, but focus on meaning along a divide between inter-human communication and intentful action as two different systems of reference. Recombining these two theories, simulations of interaction, organization, and self-organization of intentional communication can be distinguished by using al...
متن کاملDivision of Labor and Structuration Theory: A Comparative and Theoretical Analysis of Marx’s and Durkheim’s Theories as the Early Approaches to Structuration Theory
To the extent that a society is to work, there exist a need for a cooperative process, including Weber’s and Merton’s note of common means and goals. But at the same time, there exist no societal process without involving conflict; (conflict in a dynamic and dialectical sense.) Dealing with this problematic situation the emergence of “division of labor”, as a compulsive social differentiation, ...
متن کاملOrganizing Far From Equilibrium: Non-Linear Change in Organizational Fields
rganizational fields undergo upheavals. Shifting industry boundaries, new network forms, emerging sectors, and volatile ecosystems have become the stuff of everyday organizational life. Curiously, profound changes of this sort receive scant attention in organization theory and research. Researchers acknowledge field-wide flux, emergence, convergence and collapse, but sidestep direct investigati...
متن کاملGiddens's Structuration Theory and Information Systems Research
In this response, however, I would like to take issue with some aspects of their article. First, I will argue that Jones and Karsten’s characterizations of adaptive structuration theory (AST) and the approach to research AST advocates are too narrowly drawn. Second, I will raise some questions with their contention that structures exist only as memory traces, a conclusion that has important imp...
